ABOUT SACAJAWEA Specializing in small-group tours and excursions through remote regions of the world, Sacajawea Tours takes its name from the wife of a Shoshone guide who accompanied Lewis and Clarke's 1804 expedition through the Missourit River to the Pacific Ocean. She was tremendously useful to the group in her native territory, translating and acting as a symbol of peace for the expedition, as women did not accompany war parties. Lewis' diaries record that many times in the course of the next two years she proved enormously helpful. Sacajawea's ability to facilitate the comfort of the group and make the travel more enjoyable and less arduous represents our role as tour guides in escorting clients to new destinations around the world. Whether traveling through remote villages of Burma or through the rainforests of Bolivia, the rare prairie ecosystems of Alberta or some of the less-visited stone ruins of Ireland, while traveling with Sacajawea, you will not be held captive by the blandness of the bus. We explore via air and ox cart, four wheel drive and boat, elephant back and train - always accompanied by local guides and immersing ourselves in local customs, cultures and cuisine. Our primary interests are ecological and cultural: ethnic villages, animal reserves and breeding facilities, seaport fishing, historic sites, ethnic craft workshops, orphanages, wonderful restaurants and many other place of local interest.
